Kansas: a distant memory

We most certainly are NOT in Kansas anymore. Not that we were ever there. But they do speak English in Kansas.

Never have we been more acutely aware of our American-ness, reliance on technology, especially the internet, and general sense of confidence in ... knowing everything. Seeing everything in Japanese dotted by the occasional Denny's and Starbucks (accompanied by Amanda's disapproval in Emilly's suggestions to eat there) was simultaneously exhilarating and scary.

So much for Shirley's hopes for us to be global citizens. When one fails to bother to learn any of the language until the day of and needs help with using a pay phone really shows the extent of our abroad life skills.

Thankfully, family friends were able to find us (despite Emilly's failure of recognizing them) and off we were to our first subway ticket purchase and first subway ride. STRUGGS's (even with help).

A lot of other clumsy humorous things have happened but I be tired and I want to get to the best part: home cooked meal...WITH SASHIMI. It's a special type of tuna (katsuo) that must be killed, prepared, and eaten on the same day, continuously put on ice, and eaten with a special vinegar/soy sauce, ginger paste, and baby green onions....delicious.

Stay tuned tomorrow: Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya, Meiji Palace, and more?
